Radiation Oncology
The Diagnostic & Treatment Center offers state-of-the-art cancer treatment using some of the newest machines and the latest technology. The experienced staff of Radiation Oncology combines compassionate care with pin-point accuracy to create an atmosphere where our patients can be comfortable and confident with their treatment.
Radiation therapy can be used for patients with many types of cancer. Cancer can be treated either with radiation alone or in conjunction with surgery and/or chemotherapy. The Diagnostic & Treatment Center works in close collaboration with surgeons, oncologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists to provide the most effective treatment possible.
Each patient’s treatment is individualized for his or her specific disease and goal for treatment. Type, location and progression of disease may all be factors in how our staff uses the highly specialized 3-D computer planning system to target the disease and create a treatment plan. Our goal is to highly concentrate the radiation at the point where the tumor lies and minimize exposure to any healthy surrounding tissue. No matter what the goal, all patients are treated with the highest degree of accuracy.
The Varian Linear Accelerator is equipped with a Multi-Leaf Collimation system, which can change the shape of the beam to conform to the shape of a person’s tumor. This capability allows us to use Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, or IMRT, one of the newest advances in radiation therapy. The SonArray ultrasound localization technology and Electronic Portal Imaging System allows for the precise localization required for these advanced procedures. All of this equipment results in delivering the radiation therapy precisely where the cancer is and not to healthy tissues.
The large bore, 16-slice CT scanner is optimal for patient comfort, with a faster scan time and a larger opening than most scanners. It is also designed with respiratory gating capabilities that allow the best images possible.
The unit, which is staffed with highly skilled professionals, including a radiation oncologist, radiation therapists, physicists, a dosimetrist, a registered nurse, a radiation therapy assistant and a patient coordinator, is here to ensure that our patients are treated with comprehensive care beyond compare.
